EDİRNE — A devastating fire broke out in a rural field in Edirne’s Meriç district, completely destroying a combine harvester belonging to a local agricultural development cooperative. The heavy machinery, which was parked in an open field, was engulfed in flames during the evening hours, rendering it entirely unusable despite the rapid response of local emergency services.

The incident occurred in the Büyükaltıağaç village, falling under the jurisdiction of the Meriç district in Turkey’s northwestern border province of Edirne. According to initial reports from the region, the combine harvester was the property of the Büyükaltıağaç Village Agricultural Development Cooperative, an organization that plays a critical role in supporting local farmers by pooling resources for essential agricultural equipment.

The fire started under circumstances that remain entirely unexplained. As evening descended upon the rural landscape, flames suddenly erupted from the parked agricultural vehicle. Due to the highly combustible nature of residual crop dust, mechanical components, and rubber tires typically associated with heavy harvesting machinery, the fire spread with alarming speed. Within a short period, the entire body of the combine harvester was consumed by intense flames and thick black smoke, visible from various points around the village.

Local residents and workers in the vicinity who noticed the sudden burst of fire and smoke immediately alerted the authorities. Upon receiving the emergency notification, operations were swiftly coordinated to dispatch specialized teams to the rural location. Gendarmerie forces and local municipal fire department units were rushed to the scene to manage the crisis.

Upon arrival, firefighting crews initiated intensive efforts to suppress the blaze before it could spread to neighboring dry agricultural fields or pose a broader threat to the rural ecosystem. Working against time, the firefighters managed to bring the high-intensity flames under control through coordinated intervention. However, despite their prompt and dedicated efforts, the damage to the vehicle was catastrophic. The combine harvester was subjected to intense heat and structural destruction, leaving the heavy machinery completely burned out and permanently unusable.

Following the successful suppression of the fire, cooling operations were carried out at the site to ensure that no hidden embers remained to reignite the flames. Simultaneously, gendarmerie teams secured the perimeter around the burnt-out vehicle to conduct an initial forensic examination of the area.

Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact root cause of the unexpected fire. Given that the combine harvester was stationary and parked in the field at the time the flames broke out, investigators are examining multiple potential scenarios, including an electrical malfunction within the vehicle’s circuitry or other accidental factors. Technical experts are expected to inspect the remnants of the machine to gather definitive evidence regarding how the incident originated.

The destruction of the cooperative-owned vehicle represents a significant blow to the local farming community in Büyükaltıağaç village, where such shared heavy machinery is vital for seasonal agricultural operations. As the investigation continues, local stakeholders and cooperative members await further technical findings from the ongoing inquiry.
