ADANA — In a comprehensive effort to maintain public order and enhance community safety across the province, law enforcement authorities in Adana have carried out a large-scale "Peace and Security" operation. The extensive crackdown, spearheaded by the Adana Provincial Directorate of Security, mobilized hundreds of police teams and utilized advanced surveillance technology, resulting in the apprehension of dozens of fugitives, the seizure of illicit substances and weapons, and the enforcement of substantial traffic and administrative penalties.
The operation, which was deployed strategically across various neighborhoods, commercial districts, and major thoroughfares in the city, demonstrated a significant show of force by local authorities. According to official reports released by the security directorate, a total of 289 distinct police teams and 1,591 personnel participated in the coordinated sweeps. To maximize the operational reach and ensure comprehensive aerial and ground coverage, the deployment was heavily supported by advanced tactical units. These included a police helicopter providing real-time aerial intelligence, four tactical drones monitoring urban corridors, and four specially trained canine units equipped to detect narcotics and concealed contraband.
The primary objective of the multi-layered initiative was to disrupt criminal networks, apprehend individuals evading the justice system, enforce traffic compliance, and inspect public establishments to ensure adherence to local regulations. Throughout the multi-hour operation, law enforcement personnel established numerous checkpoints and conducted targeted sweeps across high-traffic zones, commercial venues, and entertainment establishments.
Tens of Thousands Checked via General Information System
A central component of the massive security operation involved identity verifications and background checks conducted by field officers. Within the framework of the province-wide sweeps, law enforcement personnel carried out General Information System (GBT) queries on a staggering 26,654 individuals.
Through these rigorous, on-the-spot electronic checks, authorities were able to screen citizens against national criminal databases. The meticulous identification process successfully identified and apprehended 64 individuals who were actively sought by judicial authorities for various crimes and outstanding arrest warrants. The detained suspects were subsequently taken into custody and transferred to local police stations for processing before being referred to judicial authorities.
Parallel to the pedestrian checks, traffic enforcement units maintained a rigorous presence on the roads to bolster highway safety and penalize reckless driving. Authorities inspected a total of 7,620 vehicles during the extensive roadside checks.
The traffic inspections yielded immediate results regarding stolen and unregistered property. Law enforcement officers successfully located and recovered two vehicles that had been previously reported stolen. Additionally, two vehicles were stripped of their operating permits and officially barred from traffic due to severe safety violations and missing documentation.
Drivers who disregarded traffic regulations and endangered public safety faced severe financial penalties. A total of 191 vehicles were cited for various infractions, resulting in a combined administrative fine of 1,139,784 Turkish Liras. Officials emphasized that such stringent traffic controls are vital not only for penalizing rule-breakers, but also for deterring potential criminal transport and enhancing overall road safety within the province.
Crackdown on Illegal Gambling and Public Nuisances
Beyond street-level and traffic controls, the comprehensive operation targeted commercial establishments and public spaces to ensure legal compliance and protect community welfare. Police teams inspected 18 publicly accessible businesses, including cafes, coffeehouses, and social gathering spots, to check for operational licenses and illegal activities.
During the inspections of these public venues, authorities uncovered illegal gambling operations. Legal proceedings were promptly initiated against two businesses and their respective owners for facilitating illegal gambling on their premises. Furthermore, administrative penalties totaling 46,416 Turkish Liras were levied against four individuals caught engaging in illegal gambling activities inside the establishments.
In addition to the gambling violations, broader administrative audits uncovered operational non-compliances and regulatory infractions in eight other businesses. Consequently, official legal processes were initiated against these establishments to address the identified irregularities.
The sweep also addressed quality-of-life issues on city streets and major intersections. Police teams focused on individuals engaging in unauthorized street activities, specifically targeting unauthorized peddling and aggressive begging at busy traffic intersections. Authorities identified 14 individuals engaging in these prohibited activities and issued administrative fines totaling 24,696 Turkish Liras in accordance with local municipal and public order regulations.
Substantial Seizures of Firearms and Illicit Narcotics
The most critical dimensions of the Adana security operation centered on the interception of illegal weapons and the suppression of the illicit drug trade. Systematic searches conducted during the inspections across individuals, vehicles, and commercial venues uncovered a significant cache of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Law enforcement officers seized a total of seven unlicensed handguns, alongside four magazines and 634 rounds of live ammunition. In addition to the handguns, the search yielded five unlicensed hunting rifles accompanied by 119 cartridges, as well as two blank-firing pistols and 13 associated cartridges. The recovered weaponry was cataloged as evidence and submitted to ballistics laboratories for forensic examination to determine if the firearms had been utilized in any prior criminal incidents in the region.
Simultaneously, the operation dealt a heavy blow to regional narcotics trafficking networks. The specialized police units, aided by the deployment of the four trained detector dogs, successfully uncovered and confiscated substantial quantities of diverse illegal substances intended for distribution.
The narcotics seizures included 11.7 grams of cocaine, 99.11 grams of methamphetamine, 37.05 grams of cannabis, 13.54 grams of synthetic cannabinoid, and 116 ecstasy pills. The confiscated drugs were secured as primary evidence, and the individuals linked to the illicit substances were taken into custody for further questioning and subsequent legal proceedings.
The Adana Provincial Directorate of Security stated that similar comprehensive public safety operations will continue unabated across the province to maintain public tranquility, combat organized crime, and ensure a secure environment for all residents.
