Traffic safety authorities in Turkey have taken swift and severe action against a motorist caught driving in the wrong direction on a divided highway, highlighting ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to crack down on dangerous driving behaviors that put human lives at risk. The incident, which quickly drew widespread attention due to the extreme hazards it created for oncoming motorists, resulted in a heavy administrative monetary penalty, alongside the temporary suspension of the driver’s license and the impoundment of the vehicle involved.
The sequence of events began when digital surveillance and video footage emerged, showing a black Hyundai sedan dangerously navigating against the flow of traffic on a major intercity route. According to the official information obtained regarding the incident, the dangerous driving maneuver took place along a busy stretch of the Bartın-Karabük highway, specifically within the jurisdiction of the Akçasu locality. The footage captured the vehicle moving directly against oncoming traffic on a divided highway section, a violation that fundamentally disregards basic traffic regulations and drastically increases the probability of a catastrophic head-on collision.

Upon the circulation and discovery of these alarming images, the Regional Traffic Branch Directorate of the police department mobilized immediately. Recognizing the severe and immediate threat such reckless behavior posed to public safety, traffic enforcement units launched a comprehensive investigation to track down the vehicle and identify the person behind the wheel. Law enforcement officials conducted a thorough examination of traffic monitoring cameras, security feeds, and route data to trace the movements of the black Hyundai sedan and pinpoint the exact identity of the driver responsible for the dangerous stunt.
Following the meticulous analysis of the camera footage and the successful identification of the motorist, legal and administrative mechanisms were swiftly enforced. The driver was penalized under the provisions of Article 46/2-j-2 of Turkey’s Highway Traffic Law, numbered 2918. This specific legal article addresses and penalizes drivers who operate their vehicles in the opposite direction on divided highways outside residential areas, unless an official sign, signal, or temporary traffic diversion indicates otherwise.

As a direct consequence of this severe traffic violation, the driver was hit with a substantial administrative monetary fine totaling 90,000 Turkish Liras. Beyond the heavy financial penalty, authorities implemented strict administrative measures to ensure that the individual is temporarily removed from traffic circulation. The driver’s official license was suspended for a period of 60 days. Additionally, the black Hyundai sedan used in the violation was towed from the scene and placed in a designated impound lot under the supervision of a trustee, where it will remain for a mandatory duration of 60 days.
This enforcement action underscores the increasing strictness with which law enforcement agencies view wrong-way driving and other severe traffic infractions across the region. Regional authorities continue to utilize electronic monitoring systems, traffic cameras, and public reports to identify motorists who endanger public safety on major thoroughfares. The substantial financial penalties and administrative sanctions serve as a stern warning to drivers regarding the legal and physical consequences of violating fundamental traffic laws on divided highways and high-speed intercity routes.
