Awards have been presented to the winning teams of the ‘Smart Road Safety Competition with 5G and Artificial Intelligence,’ organized by Turkcell in collaboration with the T3 Foundation.
ŞANLIURFA — The awards for the "Smart Road Safety Competition with 5G and Artificial Intelligence," organized by Turkcell in strategic collaboration with the Turkish Technology Team Foundation (T3 Foundation), have been officially presented to the top-performing teams. The award ceremony took place within the framework of TEKNOFEST Southeast, hosted at the Şanlıurfa GAP Airport between September 30 and October 4. The event brought together thousands of technology enthusiasts, industry leaders, and aspiring young engineers from across the region and beyond, serving as a prominent platform for demonstrating how emerging telecommunications and computing systems can be applied to pressing societal and infrastructural challenges.
During the multi-day festival, Turkcell showcased its latest next-generation technological solutions, applications, and network capabilities, with a dedicated focus on 5G infrastructure and advanced artificial intelligence systems. The Turkcell experience area emerged as one of the primary attractions for visitors throughout the event, drawing substantial attention from young researchers, university students, and technology practitioners eager to explore cutting-edge digital tools and understand their practical applications in modern public infrastructure and smart city ecosystems.
The focal point of the company’s participation at TEKNOFEST was the culmination of the smart mobility and road safety initiative. The competition was created to challenge young engineering talents to design, build, and deploy integrated software and hardware solutions capable of addressing real-world traffic management, collision reduction, and road safety problems by combining high-speed, ultra-low-latency 5G communication with intelligent algorithmic data processing.
Youth Empowerment and the National Technology Ecosystem
Addressing the significance of the competition and the broader mission of TEKNOFEST, Turkcell General Manager Dr. Ali Taha Koç emphasized the transformative role that hands-on technological development plays in shaping the future of young researchers and the domestic innovation ecosystem. Dr. Koç underscored that contemporary youth must not merely remain passive consumers of foreign technological products, but rather active creators, architects, and implementers of indigenous solutions.
"TEKNOFEST stands as an exceptionally powerful meeting ground where our youth do not merely follow technology from afar, but actively develop it with their own minds and hands," Dr. Koç stated. "We take immense pride and satisfaction in being an integral part of this dynamic ecosystem and, as always, in sharing our deep institutional knowledge, technical infrastructure, and engineering expertise with our young people."

Dr. Koç noted that the level of engagement observed at the event reflected a growing passion for high-tech engineering among the younger generation. "While showcasing our newest technological capabilities ranging from next-generation 5G connectivity to advanced artificial intelligence models in Şanlıurfa, the intense interest demonstrated by young visitors at our stand filled us with tremendous excitement and optimism," he explained.
"The ‘Smart Road Safety Competition with 5G and Artificial Intelligence,’ which we organized in close partnership with the T3 Foundation, represents a strong and tangible manifestation of this forward-looking vision," Dr. Koç continued. "Every single functional solution and architecture put forward by our young competitors directly strengthens and enriches our domestic technology ecosystem. I wholeheartedly congratulate all the winning teams, as well as every participant who dedicated their time, intellect, and energy to this initiative. We remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering youth and contributing directly to the overarching goal of a Türkiye that produces its own advanced technologies."
Broad International Scope and Rigorous Selection Process
The "Smart Road Safety Competition with 5G and Artificial Intelligence" attracted extensive interest from academic institutions both domestically and internationally, positioning it as one of the most competitive technical challenges within the TEKNOFEST 2026 programming calendar.
The initiative generated a total of 745 team applications originating from more than 150 universities spanning 11 different countries, with particularly robust participation recorded from Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). This wide geographical distribution highlighted the expanding regional reach of the TEKNOFEST framework and reflected a shared interest across neighboring academic communities in leveraging fifth-generation networks and computational intelligence for public safety.
To identify the most viable and technologically sound proposals, the competition implemented a comprehensive, multi-phase technical evaluation process:

- Initial Evaluation and Preliminary Screening: An expert panel composed of telecommunications engineers, data scientists, and transport safety specialists evaluated the original pool of 745 applicant teams based on theoretical feasibility, structural design, and proposed integration of 5G capabilities. Following this rigorous review, 163 teams successfully cleared the preliminary hurdles.
- Technical Review and Prototyping: The qualifying teams were subjected to further detailed assessments, where their algorithmic frameworks, data-processing pipelines, and network architecture models were closely scrutinized.
- Finalist Selection: From the intermediate pool, the 20 most capable teams were selected to advance to the physical final stage of the competition.
Field Testing and Demonstrations at ITU Ayazağa Campus
Prior to the grand awards presentation in Şanlıurfa, the final competitive phase of the challenge took place on August 8–9 at the Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Ayazağa Campus. The university grounds provided a dedicated testing environment where the 20 finalist teams could transition their conceptual models into operational, real-world demonstrations.
During the two-day final stage, finalist teams deployed their systems in real-time scenarios designed to simulate critical traffic, vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) interactions. Utilizing dedicated 5G wireless links and localized edge-computing architectures, participants demonstrated how low-latency data transmission enables rapid decision-making in road safety environments.
The projects addressed complex situational dynamics, such as:
- Rapid detection and classification of road hazards, obstacles, and vulnerable road users using artificial intelligence and computer vision models.
- Real-time transmission of emergency telemetry and critical warnings across vehicle networks without latency degradation.
- Dynamic traffic density management and automated incident response systems designed to assist municipal operators and emergency services.
- Optimization of edge and cloud computing resources to process high-definition video feeds and sensor telemetry simultaneously from multiple roadside units.
By testing their applications directly on the field, students gained hands-on experience in resolving real-world engineering constraints, including signal propagation characteristics, computational load balancing, data synchronization, and algorithmic accuracy under varying environmental conditions.
Recognition Across Key Engineering Disciplines
At the conclusion of the intensive field evaluations at Istanbul Technical University, the judging panel evaluated the finalists across multiple technical and communicative criteria. The assessment went beyond raw algorithmic accuracy to consider the architectural sustainability, scalability, efficiency, and clarity of presentation demonstrated by each team.

The competition culminated in the presentation of prestigious category awards, which were formally celebrated at the TEKNOFEST gathering in Şanlıurfa:
- Best Application Architecture (En İyi Uygulama Mimarisi): Awarded to the team demonstrating the most robust, scalable, and computationally efficient system architecture, seamlessly integrating artificial intelligence pipelines with high-speed 5G network layers.
- Best Presentation (En İyi Sunum): Bestowed upon the group that exhibited exceptional technical communication, delivering a clear, precise, and comprehensive defense of their engineering methodology, system design, and practical outcomes before the academic and industry jury.
- Turkcell Special Award (Turkcell Özel Ödülü): Conferred in recognition of overall innovation, operational viability, and unique engineering contributions toward solving contemporary road safety challenges through next-generation technologies.
The successful execution of the competition underscored the growing convergence of telecommunications infrastructure and intelligent software engineering, highlighting how collaborative frameworks between industry leaders like Turkcell and civic foundations like T3 Foundation continue to prepare young engineers for the complex technical landscapes of tomorrow.
